THE EVANGELICAL METHODIST CHURCH IN BOLIVIA
OFFICE OF PROMOTION AND VIM TEAM COORDINATION

The purpose of the Wholistic Development of Women Program is to aid in the development of women to their full potential as persons: awaken them, guide and form their enlightened participation in the home, church, community and nation in light of the present context. The National Executive Committee and District Coordinators of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia (IEMB) promote the organization and sponsorship of many types of extension courses for the promotion of women in all parts of Bolivia.

Courses and workshops include classes in nutrition, health, Bible Studies, evangelism, culture and understand the role of women in the church and community. The Methodist Women´s Federation of Bolivia consists of approximately 120 local women´s societies in all of the 14 districts of the IEMB. The majority of these women live in rural areas and are multicultural and multiethnic speaking Spanish, Aymara, Quechua or another regional language.

    The principal health problems and causes of death in Bolivia vary from one region of the country to another because of the extremes in climate and altitude. In the highlands, the major problems are tuberculosis, respiratory infections, malnutrition and gastroenteritis. In the lowland areas, in addition to these diseases, malaria and parasites are the dominant problems. Facing problems of this magnitude, the Evangelical Methodist church in Bolivia (IEMB), in cooperation with the Government Ministry of Health and other non-governmental organizations, assists by staffing and supplying rural health posts and by providing health education and workshops for health workers and communities throughout the nation.

    Related to this project is the Andean Rural Health Care Program (#10158A)

    The two main objectives of the program are:

a) to reduce the morbidity o and mortality rates in the program´s area of influence, and
b) promote the long term development of locally administered, autonomous basic heal care deliver systems.

To reach these objectives, the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia (IEMB):

    • Carries out a program of promotional, preventive and basic curative services directly and indirectly affecting 40,000 people in 10 communities
    • Provides patient care for indigent patients · Constructs and equips local health care facilities
    • Provides medicines and training to community health center
    • Trains human resources at the grass roots level

  1. Ministry for the Elderly #3020535

    This program supports new initiatives for providing health and survival skills to more than 1,000 Methodist older adults in Bolivia,. It will also provide on-going operational support for a new Methodist Home for the Elderly planned to begin construction in 2010. The home will provide a safe meeting and dormitory environment for older adults across the country. Health, Social Services and Psychology professionals will be on hand to provide specialized care.

    Alternative Education for Development #14744A

    This program works to develop communities through integral alternative education for children and parents.

    Comprehensive Educational Program for Children in the Central District #3020466

    This program centered in the central province of Cochabamba provides shelter and educational programs to 450 preschool children from 6 months to 6 years old.
